How to calculate an invoice total
Calculating an invoice total correctly matters — errors can delay payment, cause tax issues, or damage client trust. The formula is straightforward:
The InvoBuzz invoice calculator handles all of this automatically. Just enter your items, tax rate, and any discount — the total updates instantly as you type.
What is VAT and how do I add it to an invoice?
VAT (Value Added Tax) is a consumption tax added to the price of goods and services. If you're VAT-registered, you must add it to your invoices and pay the collected amount to your tax authority. Common VAT rates: UK 20%, Germany 19%, France 20%, India GST 18%, UAE 5%.
To add VAT to an invoice using this calculator: enter your VAT rate in the "Tax Rate (%)" field and label it "VAT". The calculator applies VAT to the subtotal after any discount is deducted, which is the legally correct method in most jurisdictions.
How to apply a discount on an invoice
There are two types of invoice discounts: percentage discounts (e.g. 10% off the subtotal) and fixed amount discounts (e.g. $50 off). This calculator supports both. Select the discount type using the % or $ button, then enter the value. Tax is calculated on the discounted subtotal — so if your subtotal is $1,000 and you apply a 10% discount, tax is calculated on $900, not $1,000.
