MwSt in Germany
Germany applies Mehrwertsteuer (MwSt/USt) at 19% standard rate. Reduced rate of 7% applies to food, books, and public transport. Tax ID or Steuernummer required on invoices.
What a legal invoice must include in Germany
A German invoice (Rechnung) must include: your full name and address, Steuernummer or USt-IdNr, client details, invoice number, issue date, description of services, net amount, MwSt rate and amount, and gross total.
German businesses are required to issue invoices with very specific legal content. Self-employed (Freiberufler) and small businesses (Kleinunternehmer) have different VAT obligations.
